NCCGA Spring 2018: Week 2 Preview

By NCCGA Student Leaders

The opening weekend of the Spring 2018 season did not disappoint! ASU, Florida and UT-Austin all took home regional wins; the Gators were ultimately named Team of the Week with some impressive scores down south. ASU's TJ Kathrineberg took Player of the Week honors, posting quality rounds of 70 + 65 = 135 (-9). We welcome 5 more regions this week, which means more teams setting their sights on St. Louis for the Spring 2018 Nationals!

Ozark Region

The Ozark Region should be one to watch in Week 2. This should be a classic shootout after 4 teams from this region all finished last season within 2 strokes of eachother according to the differential. Arkansas will be the favorite after they pulled out a bid to the Fall 2017 National Championship. Right behind the Razorbacks are the Cowboys from Oklahoma State and the University of Tulsa, who will be looking to make a mark this season. The Sooners as well as East Central University will also be competing this weekend at Battle Creek Golf Course in Broken Arrow, OK.

Pacific Region

Cal Poly enters the weekend as the favorite in the Pacific Region. They will look to pick up where they left off after sweeping both regional tournaments last season and finishing T12 at the National Championship in Vegas. Stanford, Cal Berkeley and Nevada-Reno have other plans and will look to make a dent in the side of a few Mustangs. Team will be competing at Chuck Corica in the Bay Area, CA.

Southeast Region

The Southeast Region has some strong teams competing in this week’s tournaments. The University of South Carolina, Golf Academy of America- Myrtle Beach and Clemson University are ranked in the top 40 nationally and will be challenging each other the top spot. Although the Tigers are the National Invitational Champions, don't be surprised if rival USC takes home the victory given their homefield advantage. Georgia Southern, South Carolina’s B team, and Clemson’s B team will round out the region this weekend at Columbia Country Club.

South Florida Region

Keiser University and University of Central Florida, both ranked, are teams to watch this weekend at Heritage Isles Golf and Country Club. Team's from UCF, Keiser’s and South Florida will eagerly be looking to qualify for Nationals in St. Louis. The field with be capped off by several other schools bringing individuals: Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, Nova Southeastern University and University of South Florida - St. Petersburg. Tampa is shaping up to have perfect golfing conditions, sunny and 75.  No matter what the outcome, players will have two nice rounds of golf (which is less than we can say up here up north).

Southwest Region

Inhe Southwest Region, Golf Academy- Carlsbad returns from a solid finish (T4th) in the Fall 2017 National Invitational. However, UCLA should put up a good fight and is ready to bring out a W ahead of Carlsbad. These two along with SDSU, USD, Pepperdine, USC, and individuals from nearby schools will all tee it up this weekend at Apple Valley Golf Course. The forecast looks pretty cold for Apple Valley so we’ll see who has the best mental game in the bitter, finger numbing weather.
