Where college students go for golf

NCCGA Week 6 Preview & Picks

By NCCGA Student Leaders

After so many regions have had such unfortunate weather for so long, it is finally time for the temperatures to start rising and bringing out some real golf weather. Nationals is only two weeks away! We’re on the final stretch, who will make the longest stride?

Atlantic:

The Atlantic region kicks off their season this weekend at Lakeview Golf Club in West Virginia. Robert Morris and the University of Pittsburgh are the two favorites as they finished the fall regular season just with just 1 stroke separating them in the rankings. But keep an eye out for other teams such as Penn State and WVU who won’t be far behind.

Capitol:

This week’s tournament for the Capitol region will be Musket Ridge Golf Course. The University of Maryland at College Park will be competing and looking for their fifth appearance in the national tournament. Georgetown will also be looking for another nationals appearance after their first two.

Colonial:

As we head to the second weekend for the Colonial region at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, West Virginia, the Cavaliers have a gracious lead in zone 4 although they will not be competing this weekend. Look for the Hokies and Dukes to battle it out at two great courses over the weekend!

Great Lakes:

DePaul leads the great lakes region with Northern Illinois University 8 strokes behind and University of Illinois at urbana-Champaign 34 strokes behind. The Great Lakes teams will be competing at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington, Illinois this weekend. Illinois state, Bradley and DePaul’s B team are other competing teams and will be looking for a rebound weekend. .

Indiana:

Purdue University has home field advantage this week at Coyote Crossing in West Lafayette. Indiana University-Bloomington enters this weeks tournament as the favorite as they made an appearance at Nationals in the fall but other teams such as Purdue, Butler, Notre Dame, and DePauw will be on the hunt to dethrone Indiana as the top team in the region.

Metro:

The Metro region will be playing at the Golf Club at Oxford Greens in Oxford, Connecticut this weekend. Last week Fairfield came out on top by 38 strokes, with Southern Connecticut State only in 3rd place by 7 strokes behind Central Connecticut State in second place. It will be a warm Saturday in Oxford but a rainy Sunday making for a more exciting final day of the tournament.

Midwest:

Bedford Valley will host the first regional tournament. With an honorable finish at Nationals in Las Vegas, the wolverines are ready to head into the Spring season continuing their dominance after last season. It’s going to be a battlefield out there with 7 teams competing!

New England:

The New England region has a bit of tension between the Friars and Huskies as they are both on top of zone 1 looking for a bid each to the National Championship. Who will win the region though? This weekend will take place at Heritage Country Club in Charlton, Massachusetts. .

Northeast:

The Northeast will be heading to the Ravenwood Golf Club this week. It will be a chilly weekend with temperatures inthe 40's so players will want to come prepared. Niagara, St. Bonaventure, SUNY at Binghamton, and Buffalo will battle it out this weekend to see who will claim the first regional victory of the 2018 season.

Northern New England:

Teams better bring their A game this week to The Ridge Club as it will be a battle ground to see who will secure their spot in the National Championship. Last week just 14 shots separated first and second place as UMASS-Lowell edged out Northeastern. It all comes down to this so lets keep a close watch to see who will have what it takes on Sunday to be crowned Northern NE regional champs and compete at Nationals.

North:

Glen Erin Golf Club will play host of this week’s tournament which has a packed field and promises to be a competitive one. University of Wisconsin-Madison enters as the favorite after making an appearance at Nationals in the fall. Chasing them will be UW-Stout, UW-Oshkosh, Michigan Tech and other schools looking to take UW-Madison’s spot as the top dog of the North region.

Ohio Valley:

The Ohio Valley Region has 9 teams competing in this weekend’s tournament in Lexington, KY at Marriott’s Griffin Gate Resort and Spa. Last week at the Beavercreek Golf Club Ohio State University took home first place with Ohio University 3 strokes behind them. The tournament was close overall with the top teams only a few strokes apart from each other leaving opportunities for other teams to pull out the win this weekend.

Philadelphia:

It’s finally time for the Philadelphia region’s teams to show their skill in the national rankings this weekend at Golden Oaks Golf Club, Pennsylvania. The Wildcats are the favorite leading up to tee off and the Blue Hens want a taste of victory. Who will come out on top? We’ll find out soon enough.

Twin Cities:

The Twin Cities region will be playing Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames, Iowa this weekend. In the region’s last tournament, Creighton fell short in second place by only two strokes behind University of Minnesota at Twin Cities. However with a few weeks since the last competition, we will see if the Twin Cities has kept their game up enough to take another win.
