Where college students go for golf

Wisconsin Sweeps Podium for Second-Consecutive Week

By David Urmacher

The NCCGA North Region’s inaugural season of competition concluded this weekend, with Wisconsin once again claiming first and second in a rain-shortened weekend at the Golf Courses of Lawsonia.

Torrential downpours and strong thunderstorms forced the cancellation of round one, meaning the tournament would be decided by one round on Sunday morning. Amidst dense fog, the Badgers got off to a blazing start; with senior Mike Kenning and sophomore Alex Schremp posting 2-under-par 34’s on the front nine. Schremp and fellow sophomore Corey Sweeney both eagled the par-5 5th hole to propel the Badgers to a one-day total of 379. Kenning claimed medalist honors with a one-over-par 73, followed by Schremp at 75. The Badger’s A Team also received strong performances from sophomores Bryan Taruno (76), Sweeney (77) and Wei Chean (78). Freshman Eric Anderson (78) and Senior Tom Cox (79) gave the A Team seven scores under 80.

The Badger’s B team continued Wisconsin’s dominance, led by sophomore Tyler Piddington (76) and juniors Robby Bamberger (78) and Noah Mandel (79). The Badger B Team, looking to grab a wild card berth to NCCGA Nationals, finished with a team score of 396. Wisconsin-Whitewater (416) rounded out the top three teams. The all-tournament team consisted of seven Badgers, with Marquette freshman James Christian (78) claiming the final spot.

Following these strong performances, both Wisconsin teams will be heading to the NCCGA National Championship. Wisconsin’s A Team officially won the region and finished the regular season ranked #1 in the NCCGA National Team Rankings. The B Team finished the season ranked #14 in the country and will compete at Nationals as a wild card.
