Milwaukee and the surrounding area is a destination for golf, with courses like Erin Hills, Whistling Straits, Black Wolf Run, and The Bull at Pinehurst Farms. These golf courses offer fantastic summer options for any golfer. But what do golfers in Milwaukee do during the brutal winters? Put the clubs in the basement? Pick up a new hobby? No, Milwaukee golfers keep the grind of the golf season going year round.
Unfortunately, the winter of 2015-2016 had devastating effects on a Milwaukee golfing monument when it took claim to the Currie Park Golf Dome. The dome was a gathering place for golfers from all over the Milwaukee area. From refining skills to just catching up with golfing buddies the dome always had a wide range of golfers filling its bays. The loss of the dome has torn a hole in many Milwaukee golfers’ hearts but I am here to tell you about the other options in the Milwaukee area.
All of these indoor golf facilities offer golfers the opportunity to gather their buddies in the winter for some competition, refine their skills, or just go whack some balls to get their mind off life for a while. The options include:
1) Moreland Golf Center
The range at Moreland is covered and heated to allow for golfers to hit through the elements of a Wisconsin winters. This range allows golfers to see the ball flight of their shots, have closet to the pin contests, or practice those short shots that need to stop on a dime on the frozen tundra of Wisconsin. Moreland Golf Center is a great option in any weather, although you have to be brave on days where the wind-chill is far below zero.
2) Wisconsin Indoor Golf Center
Who doesn’t love a good round on a golf simulator? The WIGC offers 6 indoor simulators where golfers can reminisce of Wisconsin summer golf while playing famous courses on top of the line simulators. The simulators are a great option for groups to go play 18 holes and have a few cold ones in a nice indoor setting no matter how bad the weather gets during the winter.
3) Nine Below MKE
Want to improve your putting skills this winter this place is for you (well sort of). Nine below is a new form of bar on Milwaukee’s East Side. This bar is forge your course adult mini golf. Players design their own mini golf hole the go around with their beverage cart and play other groups holes. Although this may not be the best practice for your whole golf game you never know when you will need to putt around Darth Vader or a Ninja Turtle on the links. Putters are provided in this golf themed bar.
4) Fore Milwaukee
Simulators in a sports bar? Sign me up! Fore Milwaukee offers golf simulators in a sports bar environment. Do I need to say anything else?
All of these options allow for Milwaukee golfers to keep the rust build up to a minimum over the winter months and be prepared to hit the links as soon as the Mother Nature allows. And once the summer hits, if you're looking for golf tournaments to show off your new skills, the Nextgengolf City Tour will be hosting three tournaments for young adults in June-August: Check out the full schedule here.
