Everyone can use a little golf help

Fundraising is often the biggest obstacle for a team to compete in the National Collegiate Club Golf Association (NCCGA). In order to help teams around the country, we have been hard at work coming up with new ways for teams to fundraise on campus and in the local community. I previously wrote about several ways that clubs can utilize different forms of golf fundraisers. Be sure to check out all the ways you can help raise money and awareness for your team.

When golfers think of hot-spots around the country, Houston golf often gets over looked. Houston, however, has more to offer than you think, especially for Millennial golfers. Between a vast number of courses surrounding the city, different golf opportunities, and year round access, every golfer needs to start planning their weekend get away to Texas. Soon, Houston golf will be atop every hacker's bucket list.

Golf can mean many different things to many different people. For some, it’s a profession, for others a hobby they can enjoy in a social setting, others a competitive arena, and still others a chance to escape everyday life. If you’re in your 20s and 30s looking to improve your golf game, while getting a chance to meet other young professionals in the city, the Nextgengolf City Tour is just the thing for you. On July 9, Chad Dailey, the Associate Golf Professional at the Bayside Golf Resort, sustained a serious brain injury while conducting a children's golf clinic. After hospitalization and numerous tests, the doctors are still at a loss to determine the reason for Chad's continuing seizures and his prognosis is uncertain. For the foreseeable future, Chad is unable to work, drive or exert himself and this, along with the cost of medical care, has led to a difficult financial situation for Chad, his wife Carrie, and their two young children.

With a miniature American flag placed on his bag of clubs, Francis made his way around the hallowed fairways of the Country Club like the general of an army. From the outset of the 18-hole playoff at the 1913 U.S. Open, there was no question that Boston's boy would take home the title. Francis maintained his trademark calm attitude during the heaviest pressure en route to a phenomenal 72 leaving him five strokes ahead of Vardon (77) and Ray (78).

We are always looking for opportunities to help our students with jobs and internships in the golf industry. Perhaps no better opportunity exists than the AJGA Communications and Traveling summer golf internships. Positions are available to work in the organization's Braselton, GA headquarters, as well as traveling to tournaments around the country.

The big news of the second round was not Francis Ouimet, Harry Vardon, or any of the American players. Instead, over 6,000 folks surrounded one big, burly, long-hitting giant named Ted Ray who broke the Country Club's then scoring record of 71 with a 70 in U.S. Open conditions.

Francis Ouimet had to earn his way by qualifying for the US Open at the The Brookline Country Club, a devilish test of a course that then measured 6,200 yards with undulating, small greens. In the early 1900's, golfers did not routinely break par as they do today. It therefore came as a surprise when Francis shot out of gates with qualifying rounds of 74-78 (on the then par 74 TCC), leaving hime one stroke behind Harry Vardon.

Golf is the ideal sport to harness the power of Movember and the NCCGA will be leading the charge this fall!

Throughout my high school and college golf days, I always turned to my trusted laser-based range finder when I needed a key distance even though it slowed down my pace of play. While I sometimes struggled to shoot pins and get accurate distances for bunkers and water hazards, it didn't really bother me since I had never experienced a product that would help deliver the distances to me quickly and easily. The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund proudly announced that the Massachusetts-based organization will partner with the John Hancock Boston Marathon Non-Profit Program once again to receive four (4) bibs for the 119th running of the Boston Marathon on April 20, 2015.

At the beginning of the 2014 Spring season, our student leadership team decided that we would allow walking given the overwhelming feedback from students complaining about taking golf carts. We heard three main complaints:

The sun was setting at 7:30 on Sunday, September 28th as the staff at Robert T. Lynch was helping me clean up the tables and chairs we had put out for our first Beanpot Tournament. In the midst of taking pictures of the winning BC Club Golf team on the 18th green, an elderly gentleman from the staff suggested that we take the winning team picture in front of the iconic statue of Francis Ouimet and Eddie Lowry that subtly greets all players walking to Brookline's municipal golf course.

Golf is the ultimate sport for charity. In fact, the PGA Tour raises more money than the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL combined. Of course the big name corporate donors drive much of this, however smaller golf fundraisers such as Chip 4 Charity performed by Zach Smith and the Youngstown State Club golf team still make an enormous difference in local communities.
