Everyone can use a little golf help

When I heard that it would be a party of only guys at the Nextgengolf Boston vs. New York Ryder Cup championship, I thought:

• Wow those are nice odds, when's our tee time?
• What better way to meet my future ex-boyfriend?
• This beats Tinder!

Off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts lies an 87-square-mile island by the name of Martha’s Vineyard. Hidden on this island is an 18-hole golf course by the name of the Vineyard Golf Club which is the only organic golf course in the world, meaning that they don’t use any pesticides on the course.

As a summer intern for the Tiger Woods Foundation, I quickly learned why the name “Tiger Woods” is synonymous with much more than “golf” or “winning”. Below are three lessons I learned through my internship with the Foundation this summer.

The golf industry is vast and holds a variety of careers everywhere from the local to international level. Whether it is working at a local golf club or becoming an executive in the corporate world for a company like Cleveland Golf and Srixon, there are opportunities out there for anyone looking for golf jobs. If the golf industry is something that interests you, you can find a track to start a career.

You should be able to enjoy your job as much as you enjoy your hobbies. One field developing as a career for Millennials is golf. Once revered as a “rich man’s sport,” golf has become more popular and accessible. Because of this, careers and golf jobs in the industry are opening up especially for Millennials.

Serious golfers--those who understand the game and it's culture--comprise a cult who live for golf and everything it stands for. Harvey Penick, legendary golf instructor and mentor to the great Ben Crenshaw, captured the essence of the golf cult in the title of his second book "And If You Play Golf, You're My Friend." Fast forward a few decades and the lingo and lifestyle of Millennial-aged golfers is now being captured on Twitter by @TotalGolfMove_. It's my pleasure to bring you the top 10 #TGMs.

If you’re like me, you are getting towards the end of your college career and looking for places to either start a career or attend grad school. Being a business major and an avid golfer, I’ve always known I wanted a career in the sports industry, but where to begin? Looking at the golf industry specifically, where does the job experience lie if you’re in college?

To help spur a dialogue around Millennial Golf, I recently published "Not Making the College Golf Cut" on Golf WRX. The feedback was mixed--some saying I'm another whiney Millennial with others fully supporting the challenges we face to play golf--but all indicative of the issues we face and how they are perceived. Among the most thoughtful replies was that of Neil Missling, a 28-year old architect residing in Minnesota whose story I wanted to share with you all.

So why were Boston young professionals taking off work and how were they playing an elite private course? Because Nextgengolf is redefining the Millennial golf experience through the Boston City Tour. 

Year after year, professional golfers are being injured by overworking muscles and ligaments in their body. Golf stretches are a key way to keep yourself from being injured. We've put together a few super easy golf stretches in a routine for you to incorporate before your next round.

The golf industry as a whole is very short sighted. The typical owner, manufacturer, and PGA professional are focused on the 50 year old male golfer who is going to buy clubs, balls, take a lesson, and play on weekend mornings. Naturally these are the players who keep the lights on, but what if you could increase revenue with Millennial golfers who want to spend and are your best advocates?

It takes hard work to start a new club golf team and one of the biggest challenges in growing golf on college campuses is finding organized groups of students interested in golf. It comes as no surprise that fraternities are a key resource in finding students interested in club golf. Matt Dohse of Iowa State is the Director of Greek Life Golf for the NCCGA in 2014, and shares his thoughts on the state of fraternity golf and why it's so important for our continued growth.
