Where college students go for golf

A summer interning at the Tiger Woods Foundation

By Sam Oleksak

Morgan Salm is a recent graduate of Toledo University where she was a four-year member of the UT Women's golf team. Since graduating as a marketing major this May, Morgan has taken on a Corporate Partnerships Intern at the Tiger Woods Foundation, working alongside the PGA Tour to hold the 2016 Deutsche Bank Championship.

Through working to establish and review sponsorship proposals and interacting with partners in the business community, the corporate partnership internship has provided direction for the marketing major.

Though this was her first experience in golf in an office setting, Morgan is not new to golf jobs.

“My first job in golf was at the Inverness Club, a Donald ross course in Toledo. I did a lot of different work there. I was a caddy, and managed outside staff ops, so I managed logistics for the 270 caddies.” Salm said. "After initially I thought I would be more interested in the marketing side of operations, my expectations pivoted after learning more about sales.”

The daughter of a member of the Air Force Academy’s golf team, Morgan grew up with a discipline and work ethic that provided her a selection of where to attend college.

“One of the biggest factor in choosing where to go to college was the vibe of the coach. My coach wanted to see that you were excellent in academics and athletics which was something I really valued, so that played a big role.”

Excelling both on the course and in the classroom, Morgan garnered acclaim as a two time Academic All-American and as a senior, earned the Middle American Conference Presidential Scholar Award.

Looking for a golf jobs out of college, Mogan came upon this job listing online.

“Most run of the mill corporate jobs were not for me. I knew I wanted to work in sports and I found this internship one day on teamwork online.”

As a marketing major, having the chance to work directly with partners and sponsors is ideal for a first job after college.

“The Tiger Woods foundation is amazing. The do a really good job of hiring former student athletes right out of college. Some of the other interns here played golf in college as well and we’ve benefitted from the experience.”Nextgengolf Job Board
