Where college students go for golf

Muscle bulging bench-presses are great for some of us, but here at Nextgengolf, we are more focused on using fitness to lower scores. A collaboration of core training and muscle memory exercises that can facilitate power and consistency in your swing will translate to better golf. Working out has become a crucial part of modern golf training; in other words, to improve your game, you better hit the gym because the days of John Daly are long gone.

Social media is now a vital part of NCCGA's growth strategy and twitter is a key tool to grow a club golf team's presence on campus. Our goal is to significantly expand each of the NCCGA teams so that there are more than just 12 elite players on the club team, but also have recreational golfers in the club who are still able to play affordably with CollegeGolfPass which partners with over 300 golf courses in 26 states that offer college students discounts on greens fees. Excitement has been building for the NCCGA fall 2013 season. With Nationals planned at Barefoot Resort and a tremendous expansion of Regions from last semester, this fall will bring excitement to club golf.

As Phil would describe, his relationship with links golf courses is somewhat love-hate. After Phil’s victory at Muirfield on Sunday, however, I’d like to think he’s in for the long haul.

As the wacky, wild weather subsides from southwest Virginia, it’s time to shed light on what’s been happening over the past week in golf and look forward to the British Open Championship weekend across the pond.

The temperature was the only thing in the 90's at our four-man CT scramble event as each of the competing teams finished at or below par at the challenging Laurel View CC. After driving the green on the 330 yard opening hole and making a 6 foot eagle putt, the four man team consisting of Gerard Bernazzni, Nick Ohannessian, Peter Boulos, and Harry Morris were off to the races in shooting an impressive 8 under score of 64.

Timing of the formation of HCGC (Holy Cross Golf Club) was absolutely perfect. Right when this program launched, so did the very young organization we all know and love today, Nextgengolf (formerly College Golf Pass) which was directly in line with my goal of increasing college-level recreational golf. When I had to reach out to them to find out what they’re all about, I was more than pleased to learn that they offered discounts at the courses the club golf team typically played at, Cyprian Keyes and Pine Ridge.

NCCGA tournaments are great, but two tournaments a semester is not enough for my Hookies. As for course discounts, if you’re looking to get out and play at your nearest golf club, check out CollegeGolfPass. But looking beyond just courses to play, let me tell you about our Ryder Cup experience which has been one of the highlights of my club golf career.

As a California native, coming over to New England for college required a lot of getting used to. The hardest thing to adjust to was not having year round golf, and no more free golf at Pebble Beach, a perk that I came to really enjoy being on the varsity team. But ever since I can remember, I always had my eyes set on going to college in New England.

Although Amherst and Williams Colleges may have the "biggest little rivalry" in the most longstanding annual football game in the country, I nonetheless easily put that aside once I caught wind of Dylan's incredible journey in which he deferred his first year of college and spent a year travelling the country playing golf in 48 states.

NCCGA competitors put hours of time and effort into making their team—and the Association as a whole—a successful entity through which we enjoy competitive non-varsity golf. Nobody exemplifies this better than University of Virginia Club Golf President Christian Dolan who recently qualified at Bethpage for the 2013 U.S. Amateur Pub Links Championship.

Learning to play good golf takes years, and unlike other sports, it’s difficult to gauge when golfers will enter their prime as players mature at different times. Who would have thought that Masters Champion Zach Johnson was not the best player on his high school or college team as he openly admits.

Because of the rapid expansion in the NCCGA over the past five months, we will be running a series of articles that can guide students who will be starting a club team in the fall. This will also be a good tool for students who have recently heard about the NCCGA and want to start a club.

One of the great distinctions between the U.S Open and the other 3 majors in golf is the qualification process. It’s more open to amateur than the Masters, but still, we see a star-studded field. But among those stars, including this year, we’ll see some college golf amateurs as well.
