Club President Top 25 National Rankings Week 2

By Teddy Rettinger

The top 5 teams in the preseason poll were all in action this past weekend. The number one team Arizona State won their first regional over rival #3 Grand Canyon by 3 strokes in a classic battle at Ken McDonald Golf Course backed by TJ Kathrineberg shooting a stellar 70-65 (-9) to lead his team to victory. In the Texas region #8 Texas pulled out a Sunday charge to beat #5 Baylor by 3 strokes. Texas was supported by club president Travis Ola firing a 69-70 (-1) in the very wet conditions to be the tournament medalist. In Florida, the #2 University of Florida took care of business while also showing depth with two B team players finishing as all-tournament team players. The biggest surprise of the weekend was the shocking play on Sunday by Southern Methodist posting a 367 (+17) to finish 4th in a very loaded Texas region. Look for Southern Methodist to try and contend in their second regional on April 7th and 8th at the Texas A&M campus course.

Voter Insight:
David McCaskill (Florida)
Q: You're one of the few people to have yourself #1, what makes you guys better then ASU?
A: Don't get me wrong, ASU is an incredibly talented team and the obvious favorite after they dominated Nationals in Vegas, but the play that I saw from my guys this weekend was incredible, especially at a relatively tough golf course.

On top of that, we had two guys on my B Team that finished All- Tournament, in which one shot under par. Our team is really deep, with over 12 golfers that could easily play in St. Louis. If those guys continue this play on the A team, I don't see why we can't challenge great teams like ASU for a National Championship.
[Travis Ola (Texas) and Brandon Bone (Cal Poly SLO) also have UF at #1]

Andrey Depuy (Niagara)
Q: Why should the Northern teams get more love in the poll?
A: Personally, our leadership believes that the northern schools are more deserving of love because even
if they are competing in the NIT the fact that northern schools don’t have a chance to play year-round
does play an effect on our choices plus the conditions teams have to play in we felt was another factor that
needed to be considered.

Luke Stull (Michigan)
Q: What is different about this week's ballot?
A: New entry into the top 25 is Bradley. Looking for big things from the founder and president, Judson Bro. A first-ballot NCCGA HOFer in the making. [Stull has Bradley at #24]
