NCCGA Spring 2018: Week 5 Preview

By NCCGA Student Leaders

Get ready for a hectic weekend! With most regions in the country hosting a tournament, expect some low scores, upsets, and a lot of competitive tension! To make it even better, some regions are wrapping up their regional tournament season, so bids for St. Louis will be a little clearer after this weekend.

Central
:

The University of Kansas will host the final regional tournament of the season this weekend at Tiffany Greens Golf Club in Kansas City. Missouri-Columbia is the favorite heading into the weekend after claiming a 32 shot victory a few weeks ago in the first tournament of 2018. Missouri State, Kansas, Saint Louis University-Main Campus and Washington University of St. Louis will all be on the hunt to take down Missouri this week and make their final case for Nationals as they #swingforstlouis.

Desert

The last regional tournament for arguably the most elite region is around the corner and the Sun Devils have the lead over the Antelopes. This weekend’s tournament is at Antelope Hills Golf Course in Prescott, Arizona. The twist is the Lopes are in a good position to still qualify for St. Louis, so they are playing against the course, not the Sun Devils in hopes of maintaining a strong differential in Zone 5!

Great Lakes:

The Great Lakes region teams will be competing in Chicago, Illinois this weekend at Harborside. Four teams including the Blue Demons have a short commute for this tournament so it looks like they will have the home course advantage. No teams in Zone 3 are ranked so there are some good opportunities for these schools to qualify for nationals.

Metro

Wintonbury Hills Golf Course in Bloomfield, Connecticut will be hosting the Metro region this weekend. Players lucked out for this tournament with the opportunity to play at such a picturesque track. There will be some pretty good competition between Lafayette, Yale, Southern Connecticut and Fairfield. who have all made at least one Nationals appearance.

Mountain

Highlands Ranch Golf Club is where the Mountain region will conclude its regular season and the Colorado State Rams have their last chance to keep a strong differential above Missouri State and Kansas in Zone 3. We’ll see if the Rams will drive their way to a 2nd national appearance.

New England:

The New England region will be playing at Agawam Hunt in Rumford, Rhode Island this weekend. Providence College and University of Connecticut will be the teams to watch, both having Nationals appearances under their belt. We will see if one of them comes out on top after this weekend.

North Carolina:

Bermuda Run Country Club will play host to this week's tournament in Winston Salem. UNCW is in first place in the NC region after tournament 1, however they only got to play 1 round due to weather and Duke and High Point were not far behind. Keep a close watch this week as this will be a very competitive tournament with 10 teams competing to get to the National Championship!.

Northern New England:

The Northern New England region will be competing at the Bass River Golf Course in South Yarmouth, Massachusetts this weekend. Although the weather is looking cold and wet, there is hope of some sun on Sunday and players have a chance to play a top course in the beautiful Cape Cod area. The University of New Hampshire and Northeastern University have the most experience at nationals by far and depending how their players play this weekend, could be there again.

Ohio Valley:

Ohio Valley teams will be competing at Beavercreek Golf Club in Beavercreek, Ohio. Some teams will have a long commute this weekend but it will be well worth their travels. There are some well established teams in this region including Miami of Ohio, Ohio University, University of Dayton, University of Cincinnati and Ohio State who will be looking for another appearance at nationals.

Ozark

The Ozark region has had quite the break between tournaments, hopefully the Sooners have been practicing and keeping their sticks fine tuned in preparation for this weekend at Cimarron Trails Golf Club. Can they keep their spot at #4 in Zone 4 and squeeze into St. Louis? We’ll know soon enough.

Texas

Another region with a lengthy gap between regional tournaments. No doubt the Aggie's have the home field advantage with the tournament at their home course. But the Longhorns can still pull out another Dub after we saw the last tournament in Dallas had no effect on their ability to play amidst long drives. Maybe the Bears will pull ahead of the longhorns and grab the 4th spot on Zone 5 for St. Louis! So much can happen, so hold onto your seats!

Northwest:

As one of the smallest regions in the country the Northwest only has 3 full teams competing this weekend at The Golf Club at Hawks Prairie. Central Washington claimed the first regional victory of the year as they took down Eastern Washington who will also be competing this weekend as well as Concordia University who is bringing a team of 4 as well as Portland who will have 2 players this week. We will be watching this one closely to see who will punch their ticket to Nationals!

South Florida:

Heron Bay Golf Club will play host to the second and final regional tournament of the spring season for the South Florida region. Keiser University enters the week as the favorite after taking home the trophy a few weeks ago at the first tournament of the year. UCF, Lynn University, Nova Southeastern, Miami and South Florida will also be competing this weekend as they look to take down Keiser and swing for St, Louis!

Pacific:

The Pacific region of the NCCGA heads to Pacific Grove Golf Links for regional 2. With great views of the ocean, Cal Berkley will look to win the region after winning the first regional tournament at Chuck Corica. Cal Poly, Stanford, and Nevada Reno will look to bounce back to try and get the win this weekend and to be in contention for a chance to head to St. Louis for Nationals!

Southwest:

Returning back to the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail this weekend, teams in the South Region will look to emerge as winners in this stacked region. Alabama will aim to take on Georgia who are both fighting for bids to the National Championship. Georgia will be led by long time NCCGA standout Jordan Davis, while Lee Brooks will try to lead the Tide into St. Louis. Rounding out the field we see Auburn, Kennesaw, Georgia Tech and Tennessee who can never be left out the conversation. Look for some low scores in soft conditions in Huntsville.

Midwest:

Fieldstone at Auburn Hills will host the first regional tournament. With an honorable finish at Nationals in Las Vegas, U Michigan is ready to head into the Spring season continuing their dominance after last season. It’s going to be a battlefield out there with 10 teams competing!

South:

The South region wraps up their regular season at The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Hampton Cove this weekend. After Georgia dominated with a 16 shot victory in the first regional, Alabama and Emory look to bounce back big time and steal the region away from the Bulldogs.  Can Georgia repeat as spring National Champions?
