NCCGA Week 7 Preview

By NCCGA Student Leaders

The final weekend of regional tournaments for the fall 2017 season features seven different regions that feed into Zones 2, 3 and 5. Competition came to a close in Zones 1 & 4 this past weekend and eight more teams officially joined Georgia in the Championship field. Eight of the top 20 teams in the latest rankings will be teeing it up meaning a lot could still happen in the race(s) for a spot in the #PartyAtPaiute.

Atlantic Region

Pittsburgh rolled to another tournament title during the first event earlier this month, beating out Penn State and Robert Morris by 12 & 13 strokes. Pitt will look to keep the longest nationals qualifying streak in the NCCGA alive, though they will likely end up in the NIT this semester. Sean Weber and Max Johnson enter the weekend tied for 79th in the NCCGA Individual Rankings.

Capitol Region

Maryland cruised to a 58 stroke victory in the first regional tournament, which was good enough to earn them the fifth ranking in Zone 3 heading into the final weekend. Maryland will need to play well if they want to jump Ohio State into the fourth spot which would earn them a spot in the Championship field.

Desert Region

Arizona State and Grand Canyon have held the top two spots in the national rankings since their first regional tournament concluded. Third ranked Baylor sits eight differential points behind the two. Both teams are both virtual locks into the Championship. GCU B enters the weekend as the number sixth ranked team in the country while ASU B slides in at number 19. Arizona, ASU, GAA Chandler and GCU tee it up at Arizona National GC this weekend.

Midwest Region

After being rained out two weeks ago, the Midwest heads to Eagle Crest Golf Club on Saturday. Michigan claimed the first regional by 10 shots over Michigan State in a one round event. Luke Stull lead the Wolverines with an even par 72. Michigan currently is the top team in the Zone 2 rankings, with Michigan State coming in at number 5.

Mountain Region

Colorado rolled to a 12 shot victory over Colorado State in Regional 1. Colorado claimed five of the all tournament team spots. This weekends tournament will be hosted at Pelican Lakes Golf and CC, the last time the region visited the course Colorado came away with a 20 stroke victory over CSU.

North Florida

Florida and Florida State enter the weekend as the 4th and 5th ranked teams in the NCCGA. Florida State’s Alex Merriman lapped the field in the first tournament, winning by seven strokes. Florida will be looking to secure a spot in Nationals for the seventh time in as many semesters while Florida State goes for a fourth straight appearance.

Southwest

GAA Carlsbad edged out UCLA by one stroke during the first tournament of the semester, coming back from seven down after round 1. This weekends tournament will take place at Woods Valley Golf Club in Valley Center. USC and San Diego will also be teeing it up.
