Where college students go for golf

The University of Alabama is developing a reputation for powerhouse golf programs. The men's college golf varsity team has won back-to-back NCAA championships, and the women's team won in 2012. Both are currently ranked in the Top 25 of the GolfWeek/Sagarin rankings. This weekend the Alabama club team will look to enhance that reputation at Dancing Rabbit. Ranked #27 in the NCCGA, the club is coming off strong performances in the South Region.

In its first semester of college golf competition, the Auburn club team had its ups and downs. The club struggled in regional #1 (finishing 6th), but roared back from a 15-stroke deficit to win regional #2. While the performance did not earn the club a spot in the 2014 NCCGA National Championship, Chase Hawthorne and Marshall Brown both qualified as individuals.

It typically takes a few semesters to get a club golf team established, let alone making it to our National Championship. The University of Florida club golf team upended this trend when they made it to Nationals in their first semester this past spring, and The University of Colorado Boulder has accomplished the same. We had the chance to catch up with Matt Lull, the guy who pulled this all together.

College golf is ready for its premier event.

After concluding the final weekend of regional tournament play over the weekend with four tournaments around the nation, the National Championship field has been set.

Last spring, Uconn was the biggest school in New England that didn't have an active competing team in the NCCGA. We worked with students to help start a club team this fall and even hosted the first ever Southern New England Regional at Windham Golf Club, UCONN's home course. Serving as Vice President of UCONN's club team and delivering some of the finest college golf in the country this fall was Mike Thibodeau, a mechanical engineer who will be making the #RoadToJersey as an individual.

With NCCGA Regional Tournament playing wrapping up on Sunday, the automatic bids for the club golf national championship at Dancing Rabbit have been determined.

Golf trick shots are trending in the world of golf, and no one is complaining. College golfers have been embracing the trick shot trend by practicing and posting their talents. Below are my top five.

In just its third year in existence, and second year competing, the Golf Club at the University of Central Florida found that the NCCGA and NextGenGolf was Money. Dave Money that is. Through the regulation of competitive non-varsity college golf tournaments, the NCCGA offers club golf teams a valuable and immediate way to compete on a local, regional and national level. The NCCGA has 27 regions across the country, including the Florida Region.

The number of MBA competitive NCCGA programs doubled in the past year to two. Yes, that's right, MIT Sloan joined Babson MBA as the only other active MBA club golf team in the NCCGA. I had the chance to catch up with John Mahler, the club president of the team to see how their experience went this fall.

Red Tail Golf Course in Devens, MA is easily one of the top 3 public golf courses in Massachusetts. Located out by Fort Devens, between 30-45 minutes outside of Boston, the course is named for the frequent Red Tail Hawks you can see flying overhead.
