How to play golf in the wind, and play well

By Mike Devlin

If you're playing golf in windy conditions expect your scores to go up (and everyone elses). However, if you can apply these few tips to your game then you'll have a big advantage against your competitors:

1. Account for the wind on all shots

Often times when playing golf in the wind people stand in disbelief thinking or saying "how could that have possibly gone that far", "how could that have come up so short", etc. Trust your initial judgment. If you think its a 3 club wind then it's probably a 3 club wind. Don't be afraid to go with your gut.

2. Wind affects your putting

For some reason, people understand that wind will affect your shots but don't think it will affect your putting; this is wrong. Although the impact won't be as severe as your full shots, you still need to account for wind while putting. Players also have a difficult time steadying themselves and their hands when the wind is strong. One tip is to widen your feet to give yourself a better base. Take these two things into consideration and you'll be hitting more putts in these tough conditions.

3. Gear up appropriately

Not always, but often times when it's windy it's also on the colder side. Personally, I like to wear a half-sleeve pullover. I find the full sleeve jackets to be a little restrictive but that's a personal opinion; many people prefer the full jacket. It is advantageous to find gear that is best fitting to your body so there isn't extra material flapping in the wind. I suggest going with ProQuip jackets. They have a ton of different options and are waterproof for the rainy days, too.

4.  Learn how to hit a "knockdown" shot

The last on our list and the most important if you can master it: the knockdown shot. Keeping the ball low and with the correct spin can be extremely useful when it's windy. Learn how to hit this shot and you'll have a huge advantage. Learn more on how to hit a knockdown with Michael Breed of the Golf Channel
