Varsity Golf Now Club at Providence College

It's officially fall, which means that club golf across the country is fully under way. I recently had the privilege of speaking with John Conley '86, who is the head coach of the NCCGA #24th ranked Providence College Friars. Providence previously had a varsity golf team at the school, and Conley was a member. However, due in part to Title IX requirements, the school dropped the men's baseball, tennis, and golf programs in 1998. The loss was short lived though, as Providence now fields a competitive and successful club golf team.

Each semester more club golf teams have started holding recreational matches against schools in their area to help prepare for regional tournaments. Clemson and Georgia are two of the top teams in the Southeast Region, both ranked in the Top 15 of the NCCGA’s Preseason National Rankings. The two club golf teams recently squared off in a friendly competition last weekend at the University of Georgia Golf Course.

Summer for collegiate club golfers is usually spent bouncing around local tracks and honing the golf game for the upcoming fall season.

But for the University of New Hampshire’s C.J. Konkowski, a golden opportunity was presented right at his doorstep.

Konkowski, a senior business major at UNH, couldn’t pass up a chance to try and qualify for the U.S. Amateur Public Links at his home course, Bretwood Golf Club, in southern New Hampshire.
