Where college students go for golf

It was a weekend filled with rain, wind, and cold weather for the first ever NCCGA Northeast regional tournament. Being held in East Syracuse at the Links of Erie Village, all five of the competing teams knew that the weather could potentially be an issue, especially in October. Considering that some of the teams had never played each other before, neither team really knew what to expect.

The North Carolina Region hosted its first tournament of the fall 2013 semester at Little River Golf Club in Carthage, NC on September 20-21. A large number of teams were able to attend this event held near historic Pinehurst. UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Charlotte, UNC Wilmington, Elon, NC State, ECU, Campbell, High Point University, and Wake Forest University’s Men’s and Women’s teams were able to attend, making a field of 10 schools.

Morningstar Golfer’s Club, Waukesha, WI--The inaugural NCCGA Great Lakes season came to an end this past weekend with Notre Dame claiming the rain-shortened weekend, but Purdue earning a trip to nationals. After completing roughly three holes on Saturday afternoon, thunderstorms and standing water throughout the course led to a cancellation of round one, meaning the tournament would consist of only 18 holes on Sunday.

After North Carolina’s first regional a few weekends ago, Campbell, UNC, and UNC Wilmington round out the top three finishers.

The Florida Region is looking forward to hosting another eventful tournament in Port St. Lucie. Santa Lucia River Club and The Legacy Club will dual host the tournament giving a fresh start each day for the competition.

NCCGA is a student driven organization with hundreds of natural leaders who help make club golf a reality for thousands of students across the country. While all club presidents are worthy of recognition, John Janisse of Xavier has done an exceptionally good job transforming a dying club into the top club on Xavier's campus.

We all dream about it, that shot which can come in a plethora of ways. The shot--an Ace or a Hole in One--is a crowning achievement for any golfer, and something I had wondered if I would ever achieve. My special moment occurred on the 13^th hole of the Legacy Golf Club by Arthur Hills during the first Midwest Regional.

One of the best parts of my job is working with club presidents to help them grow and improve their teams. An interesting trend I continue to hear is that Presidents are beginning to collaborate with one another (Virginia Tech and UVA already compete in the Commonwealth Cup) and have their own Ryder Cup style tournaments. I had the chance to interview UGA's President Richard Hardeman about a "Peach Cup" event they recently competed in against their rival Georgia Tech.

As the first NCCGA Capitol Regional tournament is on the horizon, one could argue that the region boasts one of the most impressive and competitive slates of teams of any.

The NCCGA Central Region kicked off its inaugural season last spring with its founding members Missouri, Southeast Missouri State, and Saint Louis University. As a late change it merged with the western part of the NCCGA Midwest Region picking up Notre Dame, Wisconsin, and Purdue.

The Midwest is poised for an exciting season as teams vie for a trip to Nationals at the Barefoot Resort.

The fully redesigned South region is filled with a mixture of seasoned veteran teams combined with some fresh faces to the NCCGA. Spanning the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama the region hopes to become the power house of the NCCGA.

After one semester as an official NCCGA Region, the Texas Region has doubled in size for the start of the Fall 2013 Season. As our players prepare to tee it up on Saturday and Sunday at Waterchase GC, the pressure builds for the 8 teams competing for a regional tournament victory.

The North Carolina region is only a few days away from hosting our first tournament at Little River Golf Club in Carthage, NC. This season is looking like it will be a competitive one and I am going to make some predictions as to how teams will finish up.
