Adapting to a new generation of golfers

College Golf Combines provides an opportunity for students to get noticed by college coaches

By Kris Hart

Although we hate to lose NCCGA players, every year a number of collegiate club golfers perform well enough to earn a spot on a varsity college golf team.  It’s not easy, but it all starts with getting noticed by a varsity college golf coach. We congratulate those students and are happy to say the NCCGA helped them achieve their dreams. Just look at how Cory Stamper, a Clemson Club Golfer became a varsity athlete in 2014. If you are playing club golf in hopes of making a varsity team someday, you may be able to walk-on at your current university. However, it's more common that students will transfer to a different school that is seeking talent for their varsity golf team.

Getting noticed by varsity golf coaches is difficult especially if you are already enrolled in college. The good news is that coaches are aware some students peak later in their college golf careers and you still have the chance to earn a spot playing varsity college golf. I was recently approached by Chris Gibbs who runs College Golf Combines each year in Las Vegas. The Combine is a two day event where junior golfers show off their skills to varsity college golf coaches with the hope of playing for a varsity college golf team. Although the Combine is reserved for junior golfers, Chris has invited NCCGA members to compete in the 2017 Coaches' Convention Combine. If you would like to explore opportunities for you to transfer or attend graduate school to play DI, DII, DIII or NAIA College Golf, playing in the December 9th and 10th Combine will help you get noticed by different college coaches across the US.

To learn more you can visit CollegeGolfCombines.com. Knowing money is tight for students, Chris has offered NCCGA members will receive a $200 discount on the entry fee when using the Coupon Code: NCCGA on a first come basis. If you have any questions on the combines, please contact the Tournament Director, Shannon Collins at: shannonc@collegegolfcombine.com.

I hope this information is helpful to NCCGA players looking to use club golf to get noticed by college golf coaches.
